I was really excited to speak at an international womens day as a guest speaker. I spoke about gynaecological cancers (what to look out for, how they are investigated, how to reduce your risk and also how they are managed).
I’m glad I was able to talk about ‘The Big C’ as it is a taboo subject, particularly in afro Carribean communities. Like anything, I believe change occurs through communication and education. At one point, I asked audience members to raise their hands if they knew someone who had had cancer – nearly everyones hands went out.
Cancer is so common and not always a death sentence – there is so much research out there and new treatment options, meaning people can live with cancer and live WELL for many years. Many women enter remission after successful treatment but the most important thing is to know the signs.
Signs of gynaecological cancers – see your GP to consider referral to a specialist
Any irregular vaginal bleeding over the age of 45
Any new lumps and bumps in your vulval region (skin in between your legs!)
Any abnormal vaginal discharge, particularly over the age of 45
Any swelling in the abdomen, particularly when accompanied with bloating or a change in bowel habit
Wishing everyone the best of health for the future!
